Monitter is a great tool for tracking tweets in real-time and a must have for any business using or Following hash tags. You can track, from my tests, an unlimited amount of tweets although visibility may become an issue. The optimum amount of tweets you can “Monitter” without it becoming ridiculous is about 5.
How-to
Let’s run through an example to see how this tool can help you.
You have just released a new product and want to run a hash tag competition to make them fly of the shelves. You use the hash tag #WinACoat as your prize will be your new product. In this case a beautiful embroidered coat.
1. Enter #WinACoat into the search box and click “Add Column”
2. That’s it! a list of all tweets containing #WinACoat will appear. Incidentally there is no such hash tag being used so it’s a perfect time to sell that coat
The list will refresh around every 30 seconds and can be moved between other columns so you can prioritize your searches.
Spying on yourself – Like the example above you want to find out who is using your hash tag or mentioning you. This is a great way to see you influence on Twitter as you can see how many people RT your posts in a certain time frame.
Networking – Wanting to gain more Followers and find other tweeters like you? You can search for a topic like “Technology” and see who is tweeting about it. Monitter also integrates with Twitter so that you can Follow from within the application.
Finding customers – I’m going to carry on with my coat example (please feel free to shoot me) You can be looking for people who are in need of your product and then give it to them. Search “I need a new coat” to find people on Twitter who are in need of a new coat.
Growing your community – This is one I found on another blog but it was a great idea. Search for people tweeting “First Tweet” and instantly it comes up with people posting their first twitter entries. Now, send a message to 10 of them saying “Welcome to Twitter” and you’ve just gained yourself some new Twitter buddies.
If you would like to record each tweet so that you can choose a winner I would suggest you used a tool like IFTTT (If This Then that) it allows you to set an action when a certain phrase is used in a tweet e.g. #WinACoat
